In October of 2018, 120 local moms took the field to play flag football, all in the name of breast cancer research! These moms battled on the field while raising over $20,000 for the ESSCO-MGH Breast Cancer Fund. We continue this annual event. We continue with fierce competition on the playing field, increased fundraising and heightened breast cancer awareness.
There is a 1 in 8 chance that a woman will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. This is far too many. There is only a 27% survival rate of those that have cancer spread outside of the breast & lymph nodes. We need early detection and more research to treat & cure this disease that affects so many. We need all women to be survivors!
The ESSCO-MGH Breast Cancer Research Fund was established in 1994 by Albert Cohen shortly after his then-33-year-old daughter, Lynn, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Cohen and his fellow donors had one caveat to their fundraising efforts: every single penny raised on behalf of the fund had to go directly to cancer research at the MGH. No money could be used for administrative or fundraising purposes. And, true to the founding donors’ pledge, every single penny goes directly to breast cancer research at the MGH. Today, the Fund has grown to $5 million, and is able to support innovative breast cancer research programs, in perpetuity, under the direction of the talented Dr. Kenneth K. Tanabe at MGH.
